                            The name "Linz", first mentioned in 799, derives from the Celtic "lentos" via the Roman Lentia. Already known as a central market town in the early Middle Ages, Linz developed legally into a city with civil self-government in the 13th century. A mayor was elected for the first time in 1490. In the same year, Emperor Frederick III, who took up residence in Linz Castle, designated Linz as the capital of Austria above the Enns. The most important founding of the early modern period is the woolen factory. From 1832 to 1836, the first rail connection on the continent was built with the horse-drawn railway between Linz and Budweis and between Linz and Gmunden.
