The history of the Pöstlingbergbahn

The Pöstlingbergbahn has been delighting guests from all over the world with its unusual and idyllic route for more than 110 years. Immerse yourself in the history of the Pöstlingbergbahn.

It was Ing. Josef Urbanski who, around 1891, first planned a cogwheel railway operated with steam locomotives on the Pöstlingberg. His proposal was generally well received, but the "Consortium for the construction of electrical systems in Linz" suggested an electrically operated adhesion railway, which was ultimately implemented. At that time there was no adhesion track with such a steep slope of 105‰ on the European continent.

In 1897 the construction of the Pöstlingbergbahn started. The construction was very labour-intensive and very strenuous, especially for the workers, since all earthworks still had to be carried out by hand. Heavy materials such as cable drums and catenary masts were also brought in with ox carts. Despite the difficult circumstances, the construction work progressed quickly and after almost a year, more precisely only ten months after the start of construction, operations started on May 29, 1898.
