The church, under the patronage of Saint Botolph, was built around 1450 and raised to the status of an episcopal church in 1554 after the Reformation, which started later in Aalborg than in the rest of Denmark.
A wooden church and two Romanesque churches previously stood on the site of today's church. The nave of the church was built in the Gothic style around 1450. The tower was only added in 1778-1780 and has a Dutch Renaissance-style dome. The church tower is depicted in the city coat of arms. In 1817 four dials were attached to the tower, on the south side as a sundial. Three bells hang in the tower. Significant conversions took place in the years 1860, 1886 and 1898/90. In 1899 a sacristy was added to the northern aisle. In 1942/43 the chancel was lengthened by 14 meters and a chapel was added to the north aisle.
