After the end of the medieval fortifications, the approx. 300 x 60 m square was created for the city expansion with the Maxvorstadt. It was laid out in the style of a small English garden. In 1808 it was given the name Maximilliansplatz. There were annual fairs (Dulten: Dreikönigs, Jakobi, Christkindl) and horse markets during Lent. There were also military parades.
