Dorotea (in southern Sami: Kraapohke) is the southwesternmost municipality in Västerbotten and calls itself "Lappland's southern gate". It has around 1,200 inhabitants in the immediate area and around 2,300 inhabitants in the 2,940 square kilometer municipal area. The village was originally called Bergvattnet at this point, but was renamed Dorotea after the parish was founded (1799). Since the municipality was re-established with the administrative reform in 1980, the number of inhabitants in the main town (1,730 at the time) has steadily decreased, while the total population of Sweden has increased by 18 percent.
