The bridge itself has already been written here in full. The place here offers a very good view of the nearby cathedral. Almost the entire basement is occupied by the Hohenzollern Crypt, Germany's most important dynastic burial site. Over 90 members of the House of Hohenzollern reside here, including the Great Elector. Should the memorial church to the north be rebuilt one day, the sight will be even more impressive.

From the Friedrichsbrücke (or from the excursion boat) you have a great view of this imposing cathedral with the large dome

The mood here is at its best in the early morning or in the evening. The bridge is car-free and the city can be enjoyed at this point.

A bridge has stood at this important Spree crossing between the formerly independent cities of Cölln and Berlin since 1700. It gets its name from Frederick II, who had a brick arched bridge built that already had a hinged bridge section to allow sailing ships to pass unhindered on the Spree. When the bridge could no longer cope with the growing traffic at the beginning of the 19th century, it was rebuilt in 1823. The bridge pillars remained - but cast-iron bridge arches replaced the brick arches. The cast-iron Friedrichsbrücke lasted for around 70 years, then at the end of the 19th century the clearance height for ships on the Spree was no longer sufficient and a completely new building had to be built. The new Friedrichsbrücke made of sandstone and clinker brick on just two bridge pillars was opened to traffic in 1893 and was higher and also significantly wider than its predecessor.

The Friedrichsbrücke in Berlin Mitte leads over the Spree from the Museum Island towards the Hackesche Höfe. It was built in 1703 on the orders of Frederick II, but has been completely renovated several times over the centuries. Most recently, it was rebuilt in 1982 by the VEB Autobahnkombinat as a prestressed concrete bridge using a cantilever construction.

During the Second World War, Wehrmacht troops blew up the central arch to prevent the Red Army from advancing during the Battle of Berlin. Soon after the end of the war, the blew up part was replaced by a temporary bridge made of steel girders with a wooden deck, the destroyed parts of the arch were demolished and the Spree was made navigable again by clearing the rubble. The emergency bridge could only be used by pedestrians.

On January 26, 1981, the reconstruction of the bridge based on its original model by the VEB Autobahnbaukombinat began. A prestressed concrete frame now serves as the supporting structure. By moving the bridge slightly downstream, the obelisks at the entrances to the bridge could be included in the reconstruction. The use of sandstone for the railing, parapets and abutment cladding fits in well with the monument ensemble of the Museum Island. The new Friedrichsbrücke remained closed to vehicle traffic.

From 2012 to June 2014, the Friedrichsbrücke was completely renovated. In order to restore the original reference to the historical width of 27 meters, the bridge was widened to the north and south. Around 7.7 million euros were spent on the renovation. The construction work was completed at the end of June 2014. The 60-meter-long steel longitudinal beams required for the widening were lifted from the ship in two steps in autumn 2013 using two cranes. During this work, the existing historical natural sandstone elements of the balustrades and the obelisks were also restored to their original condition. The historical obelisks were positioned in their original locations and the bridge abutments were clad with sandstone from the existing stock. The northern pedestrian area leads - as in 1894 - to the colonnade on the Museum Island
