The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the four papal basilicas in Rome, is located on the top of the Esquiline Hill and is the only one that has preserved the primitive Christian structure of its origins, although enriched with later additions.
Legend tells us that the rich Roman patrician Giovanni and his wife, having no children, decided to dedicate a church to the Virgin Mary, who appeared to them in a dream one night in August 352 AD.

Landmark papal basilica founded in the 5th century and known for its Roman mosaics and golden ceiling.
Between 1670 and 1676, Carlo Rainaldi redesigned the apse in its current forms, inside there are important works of art. On the walls of the central nave, above the entablature, are mosaic panels dating from the fifth century.
The ceiling dates back to the time of Alexander VI Borja (1492-1503) and, according to tradition, it was gilded with the first shipment of American gold, a gift from Isabella of Spain.
