The entire historic old town of Goslar was once surrounded by a huge fortification. This was not just a city wall, but a very complex and staggered defensive structure. The beginnings of this fortress go back to the 12th century. The city fortifications of Goslar only underwent their last and most massive expansion in the 16th century.
The actual city wall was around 1.50 meters thick and up to 10 meters high. In front of it was an inner ditch, in front of which there was a high and steep wall, in front of it there was an outer ditch and at the front there was a field wall. There were also numerous defensive towers of different sizes and designs. But none of this could prevent Goslar from being occupied by Swedish troops during the Thirty Years' War.

In the 18th century, the protective function of the city fortifications had become superfluous. The facilities were subsequently partially demolished. However, a large number of wall fragments, gates and towers have been preserved until our time. Today, they are presented to the city's residents and guests, restored true to the original.

The ramparts and ditches in front of the city wall were transformed into a garden and park landscape that runs like a green belt around the city center of Goslar.
