The first almshouses in Bruges were established in the 14th century. The Roman Convent is the oldest preserved almshouse in the city and is located in the Katelijnestraat.

The oldest mention of the Roman Convent, originally ‘Ramscouvent’ according to various sources, dates from 1330. The convent was initially founded as an almshouse. In the course of the 15th century, the convent was transformed into a almshouse, after which it was transferred to the board of the Onze-Lieve-Vrouw parish in 1471. The parish housed seven or eight poor women there. From 1797, the Roman Convent was managed by the Bureau of Charity. The dilapidated north wing was replaced in 1939 according to a design by architect Firmin Koentges. The renovation was heavily criticised because it was a drastic intervention that took place without permission. Public opinion was silenced by the threat that the idyllic garden, which was frequented by painters, would no longer be accessible. The most recent renovation dates from the early 2000s and reduced the number of residential units to four. During the works, traces of the original outer walls were found and part of the medieval flooring was also exposed. Other original elements, such as the 15th-century mantelpieces, are still present in the south wing.
