The park is called Volkspark Humboldthain and is super nice for a walk, even with a dog. Here you will find a swimming pool and a separate rose garden. From the flak tower you have a wonderful view. Popular meeting place at sunset.

The Humboldthain in the district of Wedding is the second park after Friedrichshain that was built especially for the citizens of Berlin. It was one of the four major green projects realized in the 19th century. After the complete destruction in the Second World War, the Humboldthain in its current form is a re-creation of the post-war period.

Volkspark Humboldthain after the imperial period.

Nothing is reminiscent of the original system. But what initially sounds like a loss is ultimately a gain. After the end of the war, the once magnificent and lively public park of the imperial era was a depressing sight.

In addition to bare areas and bomb craters, the bare bunker giants that had been built in 1941 to protect the population and had offered shelter to around 15,000 people stood rock solid. However, because of the anti-aircraft guns stationed on the bunkers, the Humboldthain was also one of the main targets of the Allied bomber formations.

Getting rid of the ugly legacies of the war was an almost impossible task. Despite blasting, only half of the larger bunker right next to the track ditch at Gesundbrunnen station could be demolished. A virtue was finally made out of necessity: the two indestructible bunkers were filled with rubble and filled up.

Instead of the monstrous buildings, there are now - as in Friedrichshain - two densely overgrown hills that look like natural elevations. The northern rubble mountain on the railway line, called Humboldthöhe, is 85 meters high and is an excellent vantage point in Berlin city center. Two of the former four flak towers protrude from the artificial dome.

The extensive sunbathing lawns, which are loosely planted according to the tradition of the landscape park, extend between the rubble hills. An outdoor pool with a restaurant was built in the north-western part of the park. In addition to a conventional playground on the sunbathing lawn near the outdoor pool, there is also an adventure playground with wooden huts in the Humboldthain next to the Ascension Church.

To commemorate the park's namesake, Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859), a two-metre-high Humboldt memorial stone was erected in 1952. It is on the main path that leads past the church from Gustav-Meyer-Allee at the corner of Brunnenstraße.
