The hike W7 "Gauss's survey points in the mountains of the southern heath" follows in the footsteps of the famous Göttingen mathematician and surveyor Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss. In the 19th century, he used the hills of the southern heath for his surveying work and two memorial stones commemorate his achievements (source: lueneburger-heide.de)

Johann Carl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1859) was a German mathematician, astronomer, geodesist and physicist. His outstanding scientific achievements were already known to his contemporaries. Among others, he has carried out the land survey of the Kingdom of Hanover and is invention of the heliotrope. To commemorate his accomplishments, he was honored with an honor that can be admired on the back of the 10-DM bill.
