The landscape here in Totengrund has its own unique charm in every season. Many visitors especially like to come in August, when a sea of purple flowers covers the entire landscape. Personally, I like this quiet place best in autumn and winter, when fog or frost makes the expansive nature sparkle. You feel like you are in the middle of a watercolor painting.

As early as 1906, the heath pastor Wilhelm Bode saved the Totengrund from planned construction measures and thus sealed the creation of the first nature reserve in Germany. In 1921 the heathland was put under nature protection. Today the Totengrund is one of the most beautiful and most visited heath areas in the entire Lüneburg Heath.

The Totengrund is a 30 hectare valley basin that lies on the edge of the Wilseder Berg near Wilsede, a village in the Lüneburg Heath.

It is a basin that was most likely formed during the Ice Age and is now covered with heather and juniper bushes. Along with the Wilseder Berg, it is one of the most famous parts of the Lüneburg Heath. The Egestorf pastor Wilhelm Bode bought the land in 1906 with donations. As a result, the Totengrund became the nucleus of the Lüneburg Heath nature reserve, established in 1921 as one of the first and largest nature reserves in Germany.
