The Maienwand is also a fantastic place to gaze into the distance. The village of Lutter is particularly beautifully embedded in the landscape.

No matter what the weather, a trip to the Maienwand is always worthwhile. Whether you choose the short round or the Elisabethhöhe half an hour longer. The view on the right shows Uder, Lutter on the lower left and left on the top, the thin, tall trees belong to the Dieteröder cliffs. Just below this one recognizes the nature park Fürstenhagen - also worthwhile goals.

If you walk the jungle path, which we did, you will miss the “Maienwand” stamp and have to go back from the viewpoint. 🤷‍♂️ The box hangs at the junction of the Leine-Werra-Weg and is called “Maienwand”, even though it is quite a distance away.

The refuge, newly built in August 2024, invites you to linger at one of the most beautiful vantage points. This view from the Maienwand offers impressive, ancient beeches and yews, steeply sloping slopes and wonderful views of the Upper Eichsfeld Plateau.

The terrain here drops steeply, in parts even vertically over 150 meters. Thanks to the steepness, a primeval forest has been preserved here, completely untouched by people and axes, consisting mainly of beeches and yews in the undergrowth. The oldest beeches date from the 18th century, as do individual specimens of yew. A real rarity: the European yew, which is protected in Germany, is hardly found as a forest tree in our country anymore.
