The Church of St. Marien in Heiligenstadt is a defining element of an entire ensemble: directly adjacent is the former Jesuit college (today a local museum) and both include a small baroque garden. In addition to St. Mary's, there is also the St. Mary's Chapel on the north portal (construction began in 1300), which leaves a completely different visual impression, probably not least because of the color. The Church of St. Mary is also popularly known as the “Old Town Church”.
