The Drachenhaus on the Bornstedter Höhenzug, on the northern edge of Potsdam's Sanssouci Park, was built between 1770 and 1772 in the style of a Chinese pagoda. In 1768, Frederick II received a request from a Rhenish grenadier to establish a vineyard. The following year, on the ridge that follows Sanssouci Palace to the west, also called "Klausberg," he had a 200-meter-long section of the southern slope terraced.

A "vineyard in the Rhineland style with the finest vines" developed, or so the grenadier promised His Majesty. However, the wine failed, and the winemaker resigned. Instead of vines, the king ordered the cultivation of peaches and "Azaroli apples."

In 1770, the long-planned Dragon House was built as quarters for the grenadier.

The model was the Ta Ho Pagoda in Canton, which the English architect William Chambers described in a book in 1757. More than 235 years passed since the Dragon House was built. During this time, the gem underwent numerous restorations to preserve the magic of the illusionistic paintings and to continue to offer visitors a chance to experience the serene and light architecture.
