The barbican of Viru Gate was part of the defense system of the Tallinn city wall built in the 14th century. A couple of centuries later, it already had 8 gates that consisted of several towers and curtain walls connecting them.

The old walls give an idea of how Tallinn was fortified and protected in the Middle Ages. Architecture from different eras is put together and yet is still individually recognizable.

The two twin towers of Viru Gate, also known as the Clay Gate, mark the transition between the business district of modern Tallinn and the historic district with its medieval UNESCO-listed streets.
They represent two of the remaining 26 defence towers from an original network of 46 that protected medieval Tallinn.
