The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral was built in 1895. A Luther memorial was originally planned for the location on Toompea, but the Russian authorities prohibited it from being erected, so today the Russian Orthodox Cathedral stands here.

The large and richly decorated in historical mixture style Christian Orthodox Church was completed in 1900 on the Toompea Hill, at the time Estonia was part of the Tsar Empire. The well-preserved cathedral is Tallinn's most generous example of Christian Orthodox sacred architecture. In the towers of the church is Tallinn's most powerful church bells ensemble. It consists of 11 bells, including Tallinn's largest 15-tonne bell. The whole carillon of the ensemble can be heard before the services. The decorated with mosaics and icons interior is worth the visit.

Probably the most beautiful church is the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, which was only built in the late 19th century.

During Estonia's independence, the cathedral, seen as a symbol of Russification, was scheduled for demolition in 1924. During World War II, the German occupiers closed the cathedral in 1941. It was extensively restored at the end of the 20th century. Some services are held in Estonian.

It is up to each one to decide whether he likes the swanky display of this gold-pregnant Czar's church. But you definitely have to see them.

With its golden onion domes, the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral towers over Tallinn like a fairytale castle – and looks as if it were conjured straight out of a Russian picture book.

Free admission: Inside, it glitters and shines so brightly that you almost forget to keep quiet (but still: no photos allowed!).

Day 4. A zig zag 250km drive from Saaremaa Island to Haapsalu castle first on the NW Estonian coastline and then onwards to Tallin. The historic centre of Tallin is UNESCO rated and justifiably so. Toompea castle and Alexander Nevsky Cathedral are simply stunning as is the rest of the town. The weather was a nice spring like 22c today too so everything looked great.

One of the most beautiful churches I've ever seen. Located in Tallinn's Upper Town, opposite the Parliament. The highlight of Tallinn. Church is accessible, entry is free.

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, built between 1894 and 1900, was so pompous because the Russians wanted to use it to demonstrate their dominion over the city. Five onion domes crown the magnificent building. The interior contains mosaics and stained glass and three lavishly gilded iconostases with images of saints.

You can also visit the interior of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral for free. Unfortunately, you are not allowed to take photos of the interior (Russian Orthodox).
The Nevsky Cathedral was built between 1894/1895 and 1900 as a Russian Orthodox cathedral by Mikhail Preobrazhensky in what was then the Estonian Governorate of the Russian Empire. A Luther monument was originally planned for the site on the Cathedral Hill, but the Russian authorities prohibited its construction. The cathedral was consecrated on April 30, 1900. The construction cost just under 600,000 rubles, of which around 430,000 were donated and 150,000 rubles were paid by the state.

During Estonia's independence, the cathedral, which was seen as a symbol of Russification, was to be demolished in 1924. During World War II, the German occupiers closed the cathedral in 1941. It was completely restored at the end of the 20th century. Some of the services are held in Estonian.

Rising majestically, Tallinn's Alexander Nevsky Cathedral embodies magnificent Russian architecture in the heart of the Estonian capital. With its golden onion domes and ornate decorations, it is not only a religious center but also a distinctive landmark. The cathedral, named after Russian Prince Alexander Nevsky, exudes a calm grandeur and is a reminder of the region's cultural diversity and historical ties.
