In 1308, citizens built the Telltor with walls around the upper end of today's Tellsteige in order to be able to control who came from the fortress to the city (especially with regard to the fortress occupants). There were repeated clashes between citizens and the Prince-Bishop's men.

In 1525, during the Peasants' War, the peasants attacked the fortress through the Telltor. At the time of the Thirty Years War, Gustav II Adolf of Sweden also attacked the fortress from the Tellsteige area through the Telltor.

From the 1730s to 1876 the prince-bishop's brewery was located on the street (see history of the Würzburger Hofbräu), which was still used as a malt house after the brewery moved to Höchberger Straße.

The street got its name in 1936. "Tell" referred to the northern part of the fortress hill below the outer castle walls (Telle = indentation in terrain).
