The Myth of the “Mother of the Country”

2017 marks the 300th anniversary of Maria Theresa's birth. She was never elected Empress or even crowned - and yet everyone knows her as Empress Maria Theresia. She was the "country mother" who guaranteed the cohesion of the peoples, and a myth that still has an impact today. Her strong personality serves as a projection surface for different images of women, because she was both a self-sacrificing mother and a good wife, as well as a devout Catholic and the most powerful ruler of the Habsburg Empire.

The Maria Theresa Monument is a huge monument in the middle of
Maria Theresa Square. Probably the most important monument of the Habsburgs
was built under the direction of Kaspar von Zumbusch over a 13-year construction period.
It was ceremoniously unveiled in 1888 in the presence of Empress Sissi.
The monument, which is over 19 meters high and weighs around 44 tons, represents Empress Maria Theresa (she ruled from 1740 to 1780, she reformed the school system, for example, and took care of state affairs as well as her 16 children) in the form of a larger-than-life, 6-meter-high figure. With her right hand she greets her people, in her left hand the Empress holds a roll of documents from the Pragmatic Sanction and the scepter. Around her are four equestrian statues of her generals.
The monument is a world cultural heritage site.

The memorial has stood on Maria-Theresien-Platz on Vienna's Ringstrasse (Burgring) since 1888 between the court museums of the time, the Art History Museum, which opened in 1891, and the Natural History Museum, which opened in 1889, against the background of the court stables of the time, today's Museumsquartier. The ensemble monument, accompanied by the Triton and Naiad fountains, is part of the World Heritage Historic Center of Vienna.

Maria-Theresien-Platz is located in Vienna, in the 1st district, on the Ringstrasse, across from Heldenplatz and Hofburg. It is framed by the city's two largest historical museum buildings, the former court museums, the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Naturhistorisches Museum. The museum quarter on the other side of the double line parallel to the ring forms the visual conclusion. In the middle of the square is the Maria Theresa monument, the largest Habsburg monument in Vienna.

The 19.4 meter high Maria Theresa monument between the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Natural History Museum is considered the most imposing work of recent plastic art in Vienna. Caspar von Zumbusch worked on this work for thirteen years (model 1874, completion 1887, unveiled on May 13, 1888, the ruler's birthday). The architecture comes from Carl von Hasenauer; everything figural is made of bronze.

The Maria Theresien Platz Vienna (B2) is located directly on the Ringstrasse, nestled in an imperial setting between the Natural History Museum and the Museum of Art History. The Hofburg is on the Ringstrasse side, and the Museum Quarter borders on the other side of the square. After the Vienna Ringstrasse was completed in 1865, this square with the gardens in front of the Hofburg was created.

This should definitely be visited on a tour. If possible I would go during the week as it is very overcrowded on weekends. 🙃👍
