The Vienna Secession (German: Wiener Secession; also known as the Union of Austrian Artists, or Vereinigung Bildender Künstler Österreichs) was formed in 1897 by a group of Austrian artists who had resigned from the Association of Austrian Artists, housed in the conservative Vienna Künstlerhaus. This movement included painters, sculptors, and architects. The first president of the Secession was Gustav Klimt, and Rudolf von Alt was made honorary president. Its official magazine was called Ver Sacrum. In 1898, the group's exhibition house was built in the vicinity of Karlsplatz. Designed by Joseph Maria Olbrich, the exhibition building soon became known simply as "the Secession" (die Sezession) and became an icon of the movement. The Secession building displayed art from several other influential artists such as Max Klinger, Eugène Grasset, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, and Arnold Bocklin and continues to be a leading modern art exhibit today. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vienna_Secession

The Secession, which was actually only built as a temporary solution, is today one of the most beautiful places to admire both classical and contemporary art at the same time and is also in an extremely prominent location right at the beginning of Vienna's popular Naschmarkt. Shortly before the turn of the century, a number of artists left the conservative "Künstlerhaus" and founded a new art association under the name "Secession" with the motto "The times their art. Art's freedom", a demand on modernity to overcome classicism and find new forms of expression. One of its leading representatives was Gustav Klimt, whose Beethoven Frieze can still be seen today in the "Keller" (basement) of the Secession.

In 1897/98 the architect Joseph Olbrich (1867-1908) built an Art Nouveau exhibition building for the Secession association on a plot of land provided by the city administration outside the inner city, which is now one of the most famous buildings in Vienna. The Blattwerk dome (the "golden Krauthappl", as the Viennese call it) has become a symbol that is not only visible from afar, but still causes a stir today and radiates far beyond the roofs of Vienna as a symbol of modernity. The Vienna Secession is one of the few successful realizations of the young artist movement's claim to represent a total work of art. In its harmony, the Vienna Secession is regarded as a prototype of modernism that pays homage to the classical muses.
