A surveying tower is a tower built over a trigonometric point, the top of which is used for aiming and often also has an observation platform itself. Numerous surveying towers were erected in Germany in the 1930s. It was often wooden structures with heights of up to 60 meters, like on the Hirschenstein in Bavaria. Only a few of these structures still exist today.

The large towers were necessary because they were visible from a great distance in order to establish intermediate points. Since there are now enough intermediate points and the surveying system has largely been switched to GPS, the towers are often no longer necessary.

The tower is a reconstruction of a Prussian survey tower. Before the advent of satellite-based point determination z. B. with GPS, the determination of the main survey points for the creation of maps was a time-consuming business. Because there had to be a line of sight between the measurement points. If the view between these points, which are often more than 50 kilometers apart, was obstructed by mountains or vegetation, for example, heavy wooden scaffolding had to be erected for the measurement.
