      In the "Mechernich Forest", which stretches from the eastern city limits of Mechernich to Satzvey, the Katzensteine rise on the border to Veybachaue near Katzvey. The striking rock formation made of colored sandstone natural rock stems from a mighty river deposit that covered the entire Eifel region around 220 million years ago. Over the course of millions of years, the upward and downward processes of the earth's crust as well as rain, wind and frost have contributed to the current appearance. The resulting overhanging rock sections offered natural protection against adverse weather conditions.

      With growing tourism, the "Katzensteine" became a popular destination. Therefore, there is unfortunately a great danger that an archaeological site monument, rare in its importance for the settlement history of the Eifel region, will suffer irreparable damage.

      Please help to prevent things from getting this far: please do not knock out any souvenirs, do not use bicycles and the like. The sight is impressive.
