    In 1908, the Bayreuth City Council decided to erect an art fountain in honor of the House of Wittelsbach to commemorate the centenary of its membership in the Kingdom of Bavaria in 1910. Bayreuth, like the entire margraviate, came under the Bavarian crown in 1810. A design by Munich sculptor Friedrich Lommel won an artistic competition. The celebration, planned for 1910, had to be postponed to July 31, 1914, because the limestone fountain was not completed in time. The Bavarian royal couple, Ludwig III and Marie Therese, had announced their attendance at the festivities. However, they were unable to come to Bayreuth due to the outbreak of the First World War.

      The Wittelsbacherbrunnen was planned in 1908 as a memorial to the water pipe from the Fichtel Mountains. It was intended to commemorate the 100-year-old connection between the city and the Wittelsbachs.

      On the occasion of Bayreuth's 100th anniversary of membership in the Kingdom of Bavaria, the foundation stone was laid on 30 June 1910 in the presence of Prince Leopold. A design by the sculptor Friedrich Lommel was implemented. Due to repeated changes by the artist, poor building materials and the insolvency of the Bayerische Steinwerke Vetter company from Würzburg, completion took until the summer of 1914. During construction, an unforeseen increase in costs occurred, which was related to the choice of expensive shell limestone and the bankruptcy of the stone supplier. For formally justified reasons, the city refused any further compensation to Lommel, who received just under 2,000 marks for his work. He was also barely mentioned in the local press at the inauguration.

      Due to the impending war, King Ludwig III was appointed as the inauguration mayor instead of King Ludwig III. Prince Alfons was inaugurated into the city. It took place as part of a celebration followed by a ceremony in the opera house on July 31, 1914 at 11 a.m., one day after the declaration of war. The celebration, which was shortened from the planned four days to two, included Alfons' entry into the city to the sound of bells ringing and cannon fire, a round dance of the "higher daughters" and a royal shooting competition in the Saas shooting house. A specially composed "throne song" was sung and the guests attended a performance of the opera The Flying Dutchman. Mayor Leopold Casselmann received the Knight's Cross of the Bavarian Crown, the award of which was linked to entry in the nobility register.

      After around a hundred years of standing, the historic fountain complex was restored in 2015.
