The Spijkenisserbrug is a lift bridge, one of three large lift bridges in the Rotterdam region, and consists of four spans. The bridge has 3 lanes, of which the middle one is used as an alternating lane. The bridge is a striking landmark in the region. The bridge has a total span of approximately 415 meters, with two main spans of 100 meters. The bridge is 19.4 meters wide and has a passage width of 87.5 meters. There are facilities for cyclists and pedestrians on both sides.

The first Spijkenisserbrug was constructed between 1900 and 1903, removing Voorne-Putten from its isolation. The bridge was part of the new tram line that was built in the following years. Initially it was a swing bridge, but this caused problems for the ever-growing ships. To widen the narrow passage, the swing bridge was changed into a lift bridge in 1933. Ultimately, this also provided insufficient space for the passing ships, so that a completely new bridge was built in 1979.
