The building was built in the 15th century as a granary and armory. In 1835/36 it was converted into a prison and later used as a warehouse and office building. After extensive renovation in the 1990s, it is now considered a monument of national importance and the largest preserved medieval granary building in Saxony.

Today it houses the Zwickau City Library. Even if you don't want to borrow a book, a visit to the venerable building is worthwhile. You can find more information and opening times here: stadtbibliothek-zwickau.de/de/index.php.

The origins of the Lower Granary, which is of architectural and historical value, lie in the 15th century. Built as a granary, it was also used as an armory for the city's cannons and defensive weapons. In 1835/36 it was converted into a prison as part of the annexation to the Osterstein Castle prison. After the penal system was closed, it served as a warehouse and office building, among other things, until 1990.

Still falling into disrepair at the beginning of the 1990s, it is now - after extensive, detailed renovation - a monument of national importance and the largest existing medieval granary building in Saxony.
