Beatles Square is a public square in Hamburg's St. Pauli district, located where the Große Freiheit meets the Reeperbahn. It is circular, 29 meters in diameter, and has a black flooring reminiscent of a vinyl record. Silhouette sculptures of the five Beatles musicians (including Stuart Sutcliffe, whose sculpture was positioned slightly apart from the other four) are placed along the edge of the square. The figure of the drummer leaves it unclear whether this is the later, well-known Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, or Pete Best, who was active during most of the band's Hamburg period.

This square is intended to commemorate the importance of Hamburg in the history of the Beatles, where the foundations of their global career were laid. The design was created by the architects Dohse & Stich and was awarded the contract in a public tender over several other competitors. The project cost over €500,000 and was funded equally by donations, sponsors, and the City of Hamburg.

The project was initiated by the Hamburg radio station Oldie 95. At the station's instigation, the IG Beat City was founded in May 2005, which sees Beatles Square as the prelude to further projects aimed at commemorating the Beatles in Hamburg's cityscape.

After Hamburg's First Mayor Ole von Beust and Senator for Culture Karin von Welck gave the Senate official approval for the implementation of the concept, construction began. The original plan called for construction to begin in late 2005/early 2006, at a cost of €100,000, and completion in May 2006, in time for the FIFA World Cup.

On May 29, 2008, at 1:00 p.m., the construction phase began with the symbolic groundbreaking ceremony, which was performed by the initiators Stephan Heller (Oldie 95), Uriz von Oertzen (Hi-Life Entertainment), Frank Otto, Karin von Welck (Senator for Culture), Markus Schreiber (then District Administrator of Hamburg-Mitte), and Jörn Walter (Chief Building Director).

Construction work was scheduled to take approximately three months, allowing the ceremonial opening to take place on September 11, 2008, by the city's First Mayor. The Beatles memorial consists of metal figures of the band members and engravings of the titles of successful Beatles songs embedded in the ground.

A circular area with a diameter of almost 30 meters was transformed into an oversized record – naturally at the end of Große Freiheit – into a giant vinyl record. The life-size metal outlines of the then five-member band at the edge of the square provide an ideal backdrop for souvenir photos. The fact that some people pose as Ringo Starr in silhouette, even though they're actually referring to Pete Best, drummer from the early days, doesn't really matter – as long as it's a Beatle!

The songs of the world's most famous mop tops were engraved in the golden grooves of the square. The band recorded their hits from 1962 onwards without the fifth Beatle. Stuart Sutcliffe was already devoting himself to his art.
