The Speicherstadtmuseum documents the history of construction and use of the historic warehouse district in Hamburg. It is located in the room - right on the ground floor - of the L memory block from 1888, which was designed by the Hamburg architect Georg Thielen in Neo-Gothic style (Hannoversche Architekturschule) and in the part used by the Speicherstadtmuseum about the original riveted skeletal structure made of wrought iron features. The museum is conveniently located at Sandtorkai 36 in the neighborhood of the HafenCity, the model train location Miniatur Wunderland, the Hamburg Dungeon and the Spice Museum and is best reached via the underground line 3 (station Baumwall).
In the Speicherstadtmuseum there are regularly public special events such as tea tastings or thriller readings as well as public tours through the Speicherstadt, which also include a guided tour through the permanent exhibition. In addition, during school holidays, the museum offers public guided tours - the "discovery tours" - targeted at children from 6 to 12 accompanied by adults.
The Speicherstadtmuseum was opened in 1995 as a privately operated branch of the Museum der Arbeit, which belongs to the Stiftung Historische Museen Hamburg. It emerged from the exhibition Speicherstadt - monument and place of work for 100 years, which was first shown in the summer of 1988 on the occasion of the centenary of the Speicherstadt and repeated in summer 1989 on the occasion of the 800th harbor birthday. Back then, the quartermaster company Eichholtz & Consorten provided two storage shelves to the Museum of Work in Block R at St. Annenufer 2 on the 3rd and 4th floor, free of charge. In 1995 Eichholtz & Cons. also the sponsoring for the newly founded Speicherstadtmuseum. Since 1996, the Speicherstadtmuseum has been supported by HHLA Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG. Since October 2011, the Speicherstadtmuseum is located in Block L of the Speicherstadt, Am Sandtorkai 36.
