Some Altona residents would probably like to have their favorite place in Hamburg renamed Wohlerspark. The former Norderreihe Cemetery, now called Wohlerspark due to its location on Wohlersallee, remains one of the Hanseatic city's most popular public green spaces despite its former use. In this small complex between St. Pauli and Altona, more contrasts converge than in any other Hamburg park: the people amidst the weathered gravestones, the play of light and shadow, the range of visitors from young to old, peace here, activity there...

The former burial ground of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Johannis was opened in 1831 and used as a cemetery until 1979. However, no new graves had been permitted since 1897. The cemetery suffered significant damage in the summer of 1943 during World War II. In addition, many of the old avenue trees were cut down for firewood in the postwar period. Until 1948, Hamburg residents grew potatoes and vegetables between the graves. Around 1979, the cemetery was finally converted into a public green space by being redesigned and opened to the public as Wohlerspark. Numerous historical structures have been preserved to this day, such as the distinctive cross of the linden avenues and many gravestones of important Hanseatic figures, including Count von Blücher-Altona. Wohlerspark is intended to be a place for quiet and contemplative relaxation. Some also call it the "Tai Chi Park" or "Meditation Park," as people like to come here for these purposes. You can sit and enjoy the sun on the old gravestones or the surrounding lawns, or jog or walk on the paved sandy paths. Sculptures can be admired in the large circular area in the center of the park, while on some weekends in the summer it serves as an open-air stage for the "Elves in the Park." Especially in spring, when the trees in Wohlerspark are in full bloom, this is arguably the most romantic place in Hamburg, with an enchanted, almost fairytale-like backdrop.

Formerly here was the cemetery Norderreihe, of which some graves still bear witness. Today it is a green area with avenues and hidden places.
