        The former collegiate church of St. Martin in Heiligenstadt in Eichsfeld, Thuringia, is the main Protestant church of the city and region. It belongs to the Mühlhausen parish of the Evangelical Church in Central Germany.

          Saint Martin, to whom the church of Heiligenstadt is consecrated, is - next to Saint Nicholas - probably one of the most popular saints of all. The memorial day of the former officer in the Roman army is November 11th. On the night after the famous “coat sharing”, when he surrendered half his army cloak to a freezing beggar, Jesus Christ appears to him in a dream. He then converted to Christianity and was later - initially against his will - elected Bishop of Tours (France).
          Many should have fond childhood memories of lantern handicrafts in kindergarten and elementary school, the evening lantern parade through the dark village / district - and of course of the delicious “Weckmann”.

            It has been a Protestant church since 1803.
            Heinrich Heine was baptized here on June 25, 1825.
            Theodor Storm also belonged to this community during his time in Heiligenstadt.
            Two of his children were baptized here.
            St. Martin's Church is also known as the "mother church of Eichsfeld".

                The Church of St. Martin, which is considered the original and mother church of the Eichsfeld, is located on the east side of Friedensplatz and was the spiritual center of the region for over 1000 years. The current building, built from local red sandstone, is the third church on this site. The second building (847-856) was already a structure with side aisles, a transept and a ring crypt that served the cult of Saints Aureus and Justinus. The current late Gothic church was built around 1276 and completed in 1485.

                    A very beautiful old (present-day) Protestant church in the spa town of Heiligenstadt. The well-preserved vaulted interior is impressive and dates back to the Gothic period. The church features a 12-segmented rose window. St. Martin's Church is said to stand on the site of the oldest church foundation in the Eichsfeld region. It is said that it was founded by Dagobert I, a Merovingian.
