The cultural history museum of the Eichsfeld experienced, interrupted by a war-related closure, a constant addition and expansion. After extensive renovation work between 1994 and 1996 and 2011 and 2012, the exhibition is presented on three floors and gives visitors an insight into the history of Eichsfeld and the city of Heiligenstadt. Valuable sacred works of art, furniture, glass and porcelain, everyday objects and costumes as well as Strecker's historical bird collection and an exhibition on Tilman Riemenschneider, one of the most important sons of the city of Heiligenstadt, round off the presentation.

The building, built in 1740 as a Jesuit college, now serves Heiligenstadt as a local history museum. The opening times are according to the notice board (as of November 2018) Tue-Fri from 10: 00-17: 00 and Sat + Sun 14: 30-17: 00.
