The Dünkreuz was built in September 1948 and inaugurated by Provost J. Streb. It is illuminated on high holidays. In 1993, consideration was given to replacing the cross because it had suffered significant damage. Ten years later, the successor cross was finally inaugurated in September 2003.

“Each of these crosses can tell its own story and what motivated people to build “their” cross on this spot. (...) These crosses were erected as visible signs and attract the attention of many people. The cross is a symbol of life. It stands as a sign of our Christian hope and wants to direct our gaze to Jesus Christ, who conquered death (…). The cross is part of our lives, just as it was part of the life of Jesus.
So I hope that many people ... visit the crosses, whether as places of silence and taking a breath before God, whether as places of community gathering, prayer and praise of God.

The Dün-Kreuz is located east of Heilbad Heiligenstadt, about 200 m above the city on the edge of the Dünwald. It offers a beautiful view over Heiligenstadt and the surrounding area; Tables, benches and a shelter are also available. The Dün-Kreuz offers a particularly beautiful sight on public holidays, because it is lit up and visible from afar.

Since 1948, there has been an approximately 13 m high wooden cross on the Düns plateau, 200 meters above Heiligenstadt.
The spot, popularly known as the “Beautiful View,” offers a wonderful view down to the city in the Leine Valley, to the Iberg with the Elisabethhöhe and, in the background, to the conical Rusteberg.
After World War II, men from Heiligenstadt wanted to express their great gratitude for their happy and healthy return home and the end of the Nazi dictatorship. They considered either making a pilgrimage to Fourteen Saints or building a cross.
In 1987 the cross was electrified following a call from the Episcopal Commissioner, Provost Paul-Julius
Kockelmann is involved in unprecedented collaborative work by members of all 3 Catholics. From the foot of the mountain, the municipalities dug an approximately 200m long trench up the mountain for a 380 volt electrical cable. On September 14, 2003, the inauguration of the 2nd Dunk Cross was celebrated by the Episcopal Commissioner Provost Heinz-Josef Durstewitz. The
