The wealthy Lords of Hellingen are known from 1151 onwards. They were in the service of the Lords of Henneberg. Where they resided is not known. Later, the Lords of Schott are mentioned, who built the four-towered and four-winged moated castle in the west of the town in 1515. In 1562, Konrad von Grumbach, son of Wilhelm von Grumbach, acquired the moated castle, which passed to the von Rußwurm family in 1601. At the end of the 17th and 18th centuries, the castle was converted into a palace. In 1873, parts of the complex were demolished in order to access the oak foundation underneath and sell it. The east and south wings, which were in need of repair, were preserved. The formerly fortified churchyard is in the south of the town.
