Käßlitz is located in the Heldburger Land between wooded hills at the southernmost tip of Thuringia on the district road 502. The district lies to the east, south and west on the border with Bavaria. The neighboring village is Poppenhausen.
103 inhabitants live in the district. South of the community near the state border is the 67.9 hectare Alstergrund nature reserve with border strips.

Settlement in the area began with the construction of a castle in the swamp. The ownership structure has constantly changed. Between Poppenhausen, Gleismuthhausen and Käßlitz, the Landwehr ran between the Electoral Saxon office of Heldburg within the care of Coburg and the county of Henneberg, after the care of Coburg fell from the Franconian counts of Henneberg to the Upper Saxon Wettins in the second half of the 14th century.
