    The Piazza del Popolo was built under Venetian rule as a focal point for urban renewal. Since then, the famous square has been the center of Ravenna.

    Piazza del Popolo - the most famous square in the city
    The previous size of the square was determined between 1470 and 1480 after the expansion of an open space on the bank of the Padenna canal. Following the example of Piazza San Marco in Venice, two columns were erected in 1483 to mark the border of the square on the river side and a lion of St. Mark was placed on the top of the column closer to the palace. The second column, however, was crowned by the statue of St. Apollinaris (the patron saint of Ravenna).

    After Pope Julius II defeated the Venetians in Ghiaia d'Adda in 1509 and conquered the city, all symbols of the Serenissima were removed from the square and the lion of St. Mark was replaced by a depiction of the patron saint of the city, Apollinaris. On the second column, however, St. Vitalis appeared. After the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy, the square was initially named after Vittorio Emanuele II. The current name Piazza del Popolo dates back to the 1946 referendum, when over 88% of Ravenna's residents voted for the Republic and against the monarchy.

    Ravenna's most important square, formed in the second half of the 15th century during the great reconstruction of the city by the Venetians. Its symbols are two columns with lion figures of St. Mark, the symbols of Venice. Around the square are historic tenement houses, some with late Venetian Gothic features. On the ground floor there are numerous cafes and restaurants.

      In 1483 they paved the pavement and erected two granite columns, on top of which they placed the Lion of San Marco and the statue of Sant'Apollinare.

      Venetian domination ended in 1509. After the return of Ravenna to the Papal States, the city became capital of the Legation of Romagna. In the 1530s, the inhabitants of Ravenna destroyed the Lion of San Marco; the top of the column remained bare for about a century.

      In 1544 the Rector's Palace was enlarged, incorporating part of the Venetian Palace, and became the Apostolic Palace, seat of the Cardinal Legate and of all the Dicasteries.

      In 1639 the Community Council took a large donation from the Convent of San Vitale, and decided to install the statue of the saint on the second marble column of the square. The operation was carried out in 1644.

        I really liked the main square, namely the Piazza del Popolo. Around the square are large palaces, not to mention the Venetian clock tower. A cappuccino or a spritz tastes great here, too.
