The prehistory of the castle park begins in the late 18th century because the fortifications remained untouched until then.
Demolition began on the western bastions in 1784 and continued until 1827. Most of the material was filled into what was originally a very wide moat. The newly created area between the palace and the moat, which was reduced to an average width of approx. 6.7 m, was planted with trees and used as a promenade along a circular avenue of poplars.
