    From 1670 onwards, at the instigation of Eleonore d'Olbreuse, the wife of Duke Georg Wilhelm, the French gardener Henri Péronnet († 1690) was commissioned to design the garden. From 1690 to 1701, René Dahuron, also a Frenchman, was in charge. The garden was probably renamed the "French Garden" after their country of origin. In the period from 1695 to 1696, a four-row linden tree avenue was laid out for the first time, which was completely renewed with the planting of 224 Dutch linden trees in 1951-1953. In honour of Eleonore d'Olbreuse, the striking tree avenue was named after her.

    The current appearance, no longer that of a French garden but that of an English landscape park, goes back to Caroline Mathilde, the divorced queen who was exiled from Denmark and lived in Celle from 1772 to 1775.

    From the middle of the 19th century, the complex was given its current appearance under the direction of the Lord Marshal Carl Ernst von Malortie according to plans by the garden inspector Franz Christian Schaumburg.

          In 1695 and 1696, a double avenue of linden trees was planted, giving the garden a dominant central axis in an east-west direction that still exists today (the linden avenue was completely renovated in 1951 - 1953).
