Kohlmarkt is one of the oldest and poshest streets in Vienna, running from Michaelerplatz to Graben. It was originally a charcoal selling point, hence the name. The Looshaus, an architectural masterpiece by Adolf Loos, built in 1911 and considered one of Vienna's first modern buildings. It was very controversial at the time because it had no facade decoration and contrasted sharply with the opposite Michaelertrakt of the Hofburg. Today it houses a bank and a café.
The Hofkonditorei Demel, a traditional confectionery that was founded in 1786 and was once k.u.k. Court confectioner was. Here you can enjoy or buy delicious tarts, cakes, strudel, chocolate and other sweets. You can also take a look into the glass bakery and watch the confectioners at work.
The Artaria House, a 19th-century former warehouse that is now a commercial building. The publishing house Artaria & Co., which published many famous composers such as Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven and Schubert, was formerly located here. On the first floor there is a plaque commemorating Frédéric Chopin, who lived here in 1830 and composed his E minor Piano Sonata.
The Great Michaelerhaus, an 18th-century Baroque palace designed by Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach. It was formerly the seat of the Hofkammer President and later the Minister of Finance. Some famous people also lived here, such as Joseph Haydn, Pietro Metastasio and Marianna Martines. Today it is a hotel.
