“The Tyrolean Zugspitzbahn from 1926 originally only went as far as the crest, for technical reasons the summit was not feasible. The station also contained a ridge hotel, which burned down in 1962 (charred pieces of wood can still be found there today, it has not been rebuilt). There is no extinguishing water up there. Among others, Max Schmeling did altitude training for his boxing matches. In 1964, the last stretch to the summit was supplemented with a cable car, after the competition on the German side had built the Eibseebahn in 1962. By the way, in the mid-2000s the tunnel was still unlocked (I was in it once), today it is used for perms frost measurements.
