            The German-Austrian border runs between the east and west peaks of the Zugspitze, but the Zugspitze originally had three peaks: east, middle and west. The east peak, which lies entirely in Germany, is the only one that has been preserved in its original form. The summit cross stands here. The middle peak fell victim to a cable car summit station in 1930. In 1938, the west peak was blown up to make room for a planned Wehrmacht air traffic control center. This was never built, however. The west peak was originally 2,964 m high.
