What is a kitchen garden pavilion doing in a cemetery?

Actually nothing. The pavilion was originally located elsewhere (approx. 2 km away) - as the name suggests: namely in a kitchen garden. The garden was laid out from 1652 for the Hanoverian Guelphs (once dukes, then electors and kings of Hanover) between today's Fössestrasse and Davenstedter Strasse in the village of Linden at the gates of Hanover and extensively redesigned in the 1740s. In 1749 the pavilion replaced the wooden pavilions and arbors from the early days of the garden as a kind of stone gazebo. After the sinking of the Welfen in 1866, the kitchen garden was closed, the building stood in the way there, but was saved by a Linden initiative, dismantled in 1911 on what is now Fössestrasse and rebuilt from 1913 on the Lindener Berg.

The listed building, today a municipal building, is now one of the most important baroque buildings in Hanover. The non-profit association Quartier has been using it for cultural purposes since 2002.

The kitchen garden pavilion in Hanover is a listed pavilion and a former pleasure house from the time of the Electorate of Hanover. The building, erected at the end of the 1740s, is one of the architectural treasures of the Lower Saxony state capital. Under the care of the Quartier e.V. association, the building on the Lindener Berg is now used as a viewing and exhibition space, particularly on the history of the former industrial city of Linden. A permanent exhibition also has pieces from the fossil collection of the geologist and paleontologist Carl Struckmann. You can climb the tower during opening times and enjoy the view over the cemetery, over Hanover and up to Benther Berg from above.
