Directly in front of the Welfenschloss stands since 1879 an impressive bronze statue of the national coat of arms of the Saxon Saxonyrosses. The 1866 resulting sculpture is mistakenly attributed to the sculptor Friedrich Wilhelm Wolff ("Tier-Wolff"), but is a liberated by lions and rider duplicate the horse of the "Lion Fighter Group", one of the most famous works of its namesake Albert Wolff, left of the stairs of the Old Museum in Berlin.

The Saxon horse is a heraldic motif. It stands for the Saxon people, the old tribal duchy of Saxony and the political units that arose from it, especially the Welf dominions. It has been the coat of arms motif of the state of Lower Saxony since the 20th century.
