This church in Speyer is dedicated to Saint Joseph (Joseph), the nurturing father of Jesus Christ. Like Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, he is a man on the threshold from the Old to the New Testament. Joseph came from the House of David, one of the twelve tribes of Israel. He was a carpenter by profession and the fiancé of the Blessed Mother Mary.
Saint Joseph's memorial day in the saints' calendar is March 19th, and the church also celebrates the feast of "Joseph the Worker" on May 1st.

The St. Joseph's Church in Speyer is a Catholic church and the center of an entire complex of buildings belonging to the St. Joseph community. In the Pax Christi cathedral parish, which covers the entire city area, it serves as a place for joint parish services, while the cathedral is the seat of the parish. The church, with its extraordinary size and magnificent furnishings, was built in response to the construction of the neighboring Protestant Memorial Church of the Protestation.
