Sint-Niklaas does not appear in the Reynaert story, but has been home to many experts of the medieval epic for more than half a century. A statue of this cunning fox in the city park was therefore inevitable.

In 1955 benches with quotes were placed in various places in the Waasland that appear in the Reynaert story, but not in Sint-Niklaas. At the festive unveiling of the benches, chairman Jozef Van Overstraeten of the Flemish Tourist Association thought that was a bit sad, especially since the Wase capital was home to pastor De Wilde and brother Aloïs, two eminent connoisseurs of the epic. That is why Sint-Niklaas not only received a Reynaertbank in 1958, but also this statue by Albert Poels. It shows Reynaert saying goodbye to King Nobel's court with crocodile tears. But his pointed erect ears betray that he has other plans.

Albert Poels chiseled the statue from pink sandstone from Mainz. Due to the exposure to wind and weather, it now turns quite red.
