The history of Sombeke, a hamlet of Waasmunster, goes back to the lordship of the same name, Sombeke, which was already mentioned in 1448.

The residential area at Sombekedries in the Durme valley at the foot of the slope formed by the front of the Wase paracuesta probably developed in the Middle Ages.

The core of Sombeke actually comprises two (!) triangular threes that are perpendicular to each other and between which the Smoorstraat forms the connection. Sombekedries forms the northern threes or upper threes of Sombeke, also called “capelledries” and is actually the central village square. The threes is delineated by several old street routes that come together here. The northern side of Sombekedries between Dommelstraat and Warandestraat is part of the old connecting axis Lokeren-Waasmunster-Temse or Lage Heerweg (Ghent-Antwerp) that runs from west to east.

The original St. Roch Chapel was built in the middle of the northern side of the upper dries on the site of an old windmill.

The southern corner of the tree-lined square leads via the Smoorstraat to the lower dries, also called “Blauwe Hoek”; this is located in front of the entrance to the castle of Sombeke (see Kasteelstraat numbers 18, 20, 22). The lords of Sombeke who were named as the owners of the adjacent dries in 1631 resided in this castle.

As a driesdorp composed of two driesen, Sombeke has a unique character.
