In a remote corner of South Limburg lies a lovely hamlet consisting of three streets. Yet there is a café, a restaurant and a chapel. The café serves ice cream, the restaurant has an idyllic Maas terrace and the chapel commemorates a gruesome event. The Moordkruiskapel was built in honour of a 45-year-old Maasband woman who was murdered on her property by an angry neighbour in the early 19th century.

Since then, peace seems to have returned. The nearby gravel extraction is being phased out and the river nature is given every opportunity to expand. The area is rural and rich in birds. Ideal to explore during a walk or bike ride.

The small hamlet of Maasband lies a little further west of this point. If you go a little further east you will find a rest area with lots of information about Maasband on information boards. It lies just before the footpath that takes you to the bridge over the Julianakanaal. An ideal place to stop if you want to walk in and around Maasband.

The hamlet of Maasband near Stein has only three streets and roughly 140 inhabitants. At high tide it will become an island in a sea of Maas water in the future.
