The castle ruins can only be visited by appointment and at a few special moments. You can also walk around the moat and then you will see it from almost every possible angle. There are not only the ruins. Be sure to walk to the White Gate behind which is the entrance to the courtyard (closed to unauthorized persons) (which you can also see).

About the castle: "Stein Castle is perhaps the most interesting monument from the recent history of Stein. It is located in the Putbeek valley, a stone's throw from the Archaeology Museum. The castle dates from the beginning of the 13th century, when Stein arose as an independent Free Imperial Lordship from a former Carolingian royal estate under the sovereignty of a lord or baron. Both for the security and protection of his territory and his subjects and in recognition of his supremacy, he had the right to a defensive castle." In the late Middle Ages, the Lordship of Stein was owned by the Merode family. You can still see that in the castle.

For a while, fathers and sisters also lived in the castle, which is also known as the mission house and of which the monastery cemetery and a memorial column at the entrance bear witness.

The castle consists of an 8-meter high motte, called the 'Upper Castle', and a moated courtyard, called the 'Lower Castle'. The entire site is surrounded by a moat. A visit to this beautiful castle ruin is definitely recommended. You can climb both the keep and the red tower and take a look in the remaining cellars. The buildings in the courtyard have been converted into expensive private apartments.
