As well as the many great sights that Stockholm has to offer on the surface, there are real gems in the metro stations. The subway (Tunnelbana in Swedish) could easily win the record as the largest art gallery in the world.

90 of the 100 stations on the Stockholm Metro are individually designed and some are simply breathtaking. Mosaics, paintings, statues, installations - more than 150 artists really let off steam in the stations.

The background to the underground art is that the train stations were partially carved into the bare rock. This has created veritable caves that are not exactly inviting for Stockholmers and tourists. So the subway stations were beautified by artists.
