    The Vasa Museum (Swedish: Vasamuseet) is a maritime museum in Stockholm, Sweden. Located on the island of Djurgården, the museum displays the only almost fully intact 16th century ship that has ever been salvaged, the 64-gun warship Vasa that sank on her maiden voyage in 1628. The Vasa Museum opened in 1990 and, according to the official web site, is the most visited museum in Scandinavia.

        Of all the museums in Stockholm, this is the absolute MUST because it is unique.
        When I was there for the first time 25 years ago, there were only Swedish labels. There are now films and audio guides in various languages and everything in English anyway.
        2 hours go by quickly.

          The ship Vasa sank in 1628 off Stockholm on its maiden voyage. After 333 years on the seabed, the impressive warship was salvaged and set off on a new journey. Today, the Vasa is the best preserved ship of the 17th century and can be admired in a specially built museum in Stockholm. This unique cultural treasure includes 98 percent of the original parts, including hundreds of artfully carved wooden sculptures.

          In addition to the ship, the Vasa Museum also houses various exhibitions on the short but extensive history of the Vasa. There is also a well-stocked museum shop and a popular restaurant with various dishes, coffee and cake. Museum tours in English are offered several times a day. Audio guides provide background information in many languages. A film about the Vasa and the children's film "The Vasa Piglet" are shown daily in various languages. All of this is included in the admission price.

            The museum revolves around one (immense) object: the warship Vasa. This ship capsized and sank during its maiden voyage in 1628, with the harbor still in sight. In 1961 they succeeded in salvaging the ship. It was conserved and reconstructed and has been open to visitors since 1990. For many people, this is the top attraction of Stockholm: a lot of people (read far too many people) in the museum, which did not always make it pleasant. Despite the crowds, definitely a top place that you should not miss in Stockholm.

                A museum that has just one ship as its theme?

                Incredibly, the whole thing is so exciting and beautifully done that we spent over 3 hours in the museum and aren't sure we really saw everything.

                The huge ship that sank on its maiden voyage in the 17th century after traveling just 1km is really impressive. What the Swedes built around it is even more amazing. The museum is really worth a visit.

                                          A museum I highly recommend. Astonishing to see a ship that old being so well preserved. Amazing to see all the detail work on the ship. And just astounding how it flipped over and sank just a couple hundred meters into its maiden voyage.
