The Willigis Bridge - Aschaffenburg🚴‍

The Willigis Bridge in Aschaffenburg connects the districts of Leider and Nilkheim with the city center/inner city district across the Main River.

In 989, Archbishop Willigs of Mainz had the first wooden bridge built over the Main River at the current location of the Willigis Bridge. At that time, it was the only bridge over the Main River between Frankfurt and Würzburg. Severe ice drift destroyed the bridge. A stone arch bridge was built to replace the destroyed wooden bridge. This crossing had two bridge towers. The bridge tower on the right bank of the Main River was demolished in 1771, and the one on the left bank in 1780. As part of the port expansion, the bridge was replaced by a new one after 1889, which in turn was severely damaged by war in the spring of 1945. According to legend, in November 1631, towards the end of the Thirty Years' War, Father Bernhard von Trier successfully pleaded with the Swedish King Gustav II Adolf on the bridge to spare the city and its citizens.

The current bridge is a post-war structure. The previous one did not survive World War II. The new bridge was approved for construction in 1969.
