The masonry dates back to the "Church of the Holy Sepulcher", which Cardinal Albrecht von Brandenburg had built in 1543-45 at the city gates for the Beguines, a religiously and socially oriented community of single women. It was a single-nave hall church with a round end. The remains of three buttresses are still preserved on the outside.

The ruin invites you to see more, unfortunately this is not possible because a large closed gate prevents you from doing so 🙈

As part of the 2022 Cultural Days, an image of a "Beguine" will be installed on the outer wall of the church ruins. It is a tribute to her charitable work in caring for the poor and the sick, but also a reference to the origins of the church building and the stories and history associated with it.

The Beguines are a community of pious women founded in Belgium in the 11th century who lead a monastic life, but are not subject to any religious rules. They are dedicated to caring for the poor and the sick.

The church ruins of the Holy Sepulchre, also known as the Schöntal ruins, are the ruins of a beguinage church that was built between 1543 and 1545 and burned down in 1552. This was built by Archbishop Albrecht of Brandenburg in the last years of his life in the "Tiergarten zu Aschaffenburg". In 1540 he made his partner Agnes Pless the head of the Beguine convent. The building was largely destroyed as early as in the Schmalkaldic War of 1546 and a few years later in the Second Margrave War of 1552, as well as through entrenchment work in 1641 and finally in the Second World War. With the dissolution of the Beguines' Convent, the Aschaffenburg Holy Sepulcher was soon left to decay and later only used as a house for people suffering from epidemics. Although the church building only stood for a short time, the presence of the beguines in Aschaffenburg's local history has been handed down mainly in the zoo. The ruins were later included in the park design. (Source: Wikipedia)

Schöntal Park is a landscaped garden in the heart of the city of Aschaffenburg.

The Schöntal was originally created between 1440 and 1450 by Dietrich Schenk von Erbach, Elector of Mainz, in front of the city fortifications as a zoo to supply the palace kitchen with game, and was surrounded by a wall. A tower stood at the level of today's roundabout on Grünewaldstraße and at the junction with Kittelstraße, the so-called Black Gate. To the south, the zoo was also bordered by the Leergraben, a canal fed by the Kühruhgraben, along today's Würzburger Straße.

Around 1530, the Elector of Mainz and Archbishop Albrecht von Brandenburg added a court kitchen garden to the zoo along today's Platanenallee. For this purpose, the old zoo wall was demolished, and a new wall with round towers at both corners was built around the court garden.

Around 1780, under Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal, the Tiergarten was redesigned into an English landscape garden by the garden artist Friedrich Ludwig Sckell (1750–1823). The ruins of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, part of the former Beguine settlement, were incorporated into the design, and a pond fed by the Röderbach stream was created around them. After the hunting armory was relocated to the Pheasantry, an orangery building was built on the same site at the end of the 18th century according to plans by Emanuel Joseph d'Herigoyen.

The northern part of the complex was used by the Bavarian state as a courtyard and vegetable garden until the 1950s. Afterward, it became the property of the city of Aschaffenburg, which also designed this area in the English style, removed the surrounding wall, and created the wide footpath to the City Gallery.
